“Nike: Form Follows Motion” Explores the Brand’s Evolution Through Rare Prototypes, Sketches, Technology and Iconic Footwear
Nike is bringing more than five decades of its design history to New York’s Museum of Arts and Design with “Nike: Form Follows Motion.” Originally organized by the Vitra Design Museum, the exhibition draws from Nike’s extensive internal archive of more than 200,000 objects, showcasing early experiments, prototypes and sketches alongside familiar footwear.
The exhibition traces Nike’s journey from its early running roots and Bill Bowerman’s waffle-sole experiments to major innovations such as Air, Flyknit and Vaporfly. Visitors can also see early Air prototypes, testing equipment and designs that highlight how Nike expanded into basketball, tennis, football and skateboarding.
Beyond performance, the exhibition explores Nike’s influence on wider culture. Iconic models including the Air Force 1 and Dunk are presented alongside music, collaborations and other cultural references, highlighting how the sneakers became closely connected to streetwear, fashion, music and skateboarding.
“Nike: Form Follows Motion” is on view at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York through March 7, 2027.
