Marking its 20th anniversary, the iconic player-exclusive sneaker returned in May in an updated Protro edition.
For two decades, the Nike Air Force 1 “Denim” remained one of the rarest grails in Kobe Bryant’s sneaker archive. Originally gifted to Bryant as a Player Exclusive in 2006, the iconic pair finally emerged from the vault for a public release in celebration of its 20th anniversary, giving fans and collectors the chance to own a long-coveted piece of Kobe history.
After Bryant signed with Nike in 2003, the brand created several exclusive Air Force 1 editions for the basketball legend, including the standout “Denim” concept from 2006. The released version stayed true to the original design, featuring a two-tone denim construction with dark Obsidian panels contrasted by lighter washed denim sections throughout the upper.
Bright Safety Orange stitching, an orange outsole, and Kobe’s signature Sheath logo embroidered near the heel added bold contrast to the indigo-heavy palette. However, the sneaker was not simply recreated as a visual retro. Nike modernized the silhouette with Protro upgrades, replacing traditional Air Force 1 cushioning with a full-length ReactX drop-in midsole for enhanced comfort and performance.
Additional details included a snake-inspired traction pattern on the outsole alongside mini Kobe Sheath logos placed at the toe and heel. By combining classic mid-2000s design elements with updated technology, the Nike Kobe Air Force 1 Low Protro “Denim” paid tribute to Bryant’s lasting influence across both basketball and sneaker culture.
