Junya Watanabe MAN and New Balance Bring the “Lost Prototype” 574 Back to Life

A forgotten New Balance prototype returns with Junya Watanabe MAN’s refined touch.

Junya Watanabe MAN and New Balance revisit the brand’s archives with the return of the 574 “Lost Prototype,” bringing back one of New Balance’s lesser-known designs. Blending heritage running aesthetics with contemporary craftsmanship, the collaboration reintroduces a silhouette that bridges the gap between late-1980s performance footwear and early-1990s lifestyle sneakers.

Originally released in limited numbers in 2017, the “Lost Prototype” was inspired by an unreleased sample discovered in New Balance’s archives. Positioned between the M576 and the eventual M574, the updated version retains its classic roots while elevating the design with premium nubuck overlays and breathable mesh panels for a more refined finish.

The silhouette also receives subtle design updates, including a sleeker toe shape, a more sculpted sole unit and CCAP cushioning for improved comfort and stability. Co-branded details, such as JUNYA WATANABE MAN branding on the heel tabs and custom tongue labels, complete the collaboration.

Available in versatile Light Grey and Brown Beige colourways, the sneaker combines understated tones with premium materials, while the Brown Beige version is accented with a bold orange detail on the midsole for a contemporary touch.
