Junya Watanabe MAN and New Balance are revisiting the brand’s archives to bring back one of its rarest and most intriguing designs, the 574 “Lost Prototype.” Inspired by a previously unseen archival sample, the collaboration celebrates a forgotten chapter in New Balance’s history while giving the silhouette a premium refresh that blends classic running heritage with contemporary craftsmanship. The result is a refined take on an understated icon, appealing to fans of timeless, heritage-driven footwear.

Originally introduced in a limited release in 2017, the “Lost Prototype” traces its origins to an experimental design discovered within New Balance’s archives. It represents the transitional period between the launch of the M576 in 1988 and the production-ready M574 that became a staple throughout the early 1990s. Staying true to its vintage roots, this updated version features luxurious nubuck overlays paired with breathable mesh underlays across the upper, offering a balance of elevated materials and classic athletic styling.

The silhouette has also been subtly refined with a slimmer toe box and a taller, more sculpted sole unit, giving it a sharper and more modern profile than the standard 574. Underfoot, CCAP cushioning delivers reliable comfort and stability, while exclusive collaborative touches—including JUNYA WATANABE MAN branding on the heel tabs and custom tongue labels—highlight the partnership without overpowering the shoe’s clean design.

The collection arrives in two versatile colourways that suit a wide range of styles. The “Light Grey” edition pairs dark grey nubuck with soft, yellow-tinted grey mesh and crisp white heel tabs for a classic New Balance aesthetic. Meanwhile, the “Brown Beige” colourway embraces warm, earthy tones throughout the upper, complemented by a bold orange accent on the lateral heel of the midsole, adding a subtle yet distinctive contrast to the understated design.
