Bringing back the iconic “Nike Air” heel branding, the legendary 1988 colorway is officially set to return to retailers this summer.
When it comes to getting early access to the most exclusive and highly sought-after sneakers, DJ Khaled is usually among the first in line. In a recent sneaker showcase shared on social media, the music mogul surprised Jordan fans by revealing an early look at one of the year’s most anticipated retros. Returning for the first time since 2016, the legendary Air Jordan 3 “True Blue” is officially making its comeback this summer in authentic OG styling.
Although Khaled only teased the heel portion of the shoe, it confirmed the detail fans had been hoping for — the return of the iconic “Nike Air” branding on the heel tab. For dedicated collectors and longtime sneaker enthusiasts, that original branding is a key element that ties the retro release back to the sneaker’s 1988 roots.
The “True Blue” colorway remains one of the most iconic original designs in the Air Jordan 3 catalog. Instead of following the classic Chicago Bulls-inspired palette, it opts for a cleaner and more versatile aesthetic, featuring a white leather upper paired with signature grey elephant print overlays. Vibrant “True Blue” accents appear throughout the midsole, eyelets, and inner lining, while “Varsity Red” touches on the Jumpman logo and lower eyelets add striking contrast.
Interestingly, Michael Jordan never wore the original 1988 “True Blue” edition during his time with the Bulls. However, he famously brought out the 2001 retro version during his stint with the Washington Wizards later in his career. Since then, the sneaker has returned in limited rereleases in 2009, 2011, and 2016, but the long-awaited comeback of the “Nike Air” heel branding has pushed anticipation to another level.
